Taiwan's Defense Tech on Display at Exhibition

AIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan's Defense Ministry is once again participating in the biennial Taipei Aerospace & Defense Technology Exhibition (TADTE), set to kick off today, to showcase top-notch locally developed defense technology and weapon systems, the military said yesterday.

Making the announcement at a pre-show press conference, You Yue-tarng (游玉堂), a Ministry of National Defense (MND) official responsible for the military's pavilion at the 2015 TADTE, said the R.O.C. armed forces will showcase state-of-the-art technology during the four-day show that runs until Sunday.

The MND will display top-notch equipment of the R.O.C.'s Army, Navy, Air Force and Combined Logistics, as well as the military's chief research institution, Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (CSIST, 中山科學研究院), at the show at the Exhibition Hall 1 of Taipei World Trade Center, he said.

The pavilion will highlight weapons and equipment, simulation systems, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), space technology, defense technology R&D.

"The purpose for the show to is demonstrate locally developed self-defense systems and those acquired from abroad to boost the nationals' confidence over the R.O.C. military's capabilities in defending the country," You said.

The MND pavilion features four major areas, including an area to showcase advanced weapon systems; an area to display research and development results; a recruiting center and an area where fair-goers can personally try the simulators for weapon systems and aircraft, he noted.

In the weapon display area, a total of 31 kinds of weapons and armaments that are in active service in Taiwan are being put on display, including models of IDF fighter jets, Hsiung Feng III supersonic anti-ship missile, Antelope Air Defense system and "Clouded Leopard" eight-wheeled Taiwan Infantry Fighting Vehicle.

In the simulation area, TADTE visitors can personally experience some of the simulation systems currently used by local military to enhance training, You said.

Simulation systems to be unveiled during the fair include a prototype of the Chung Shyang II UAV, Small Arms Training System, Helicopter Flight Simulator, F-16 Simulator, Immersion Interaction Shooting VR and Joint Synthetic Battlespace, according to the MND.

A recruiting center will also be in place during the show to boost voluntary military recruitment of the R.O.C. forces as the military is moving toward an all-volunteer force.

According to the TADTE organizer, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), the show will feature products of private companies from home and abroad, including Taichung-based Aerospace Industrial Development Corp. (AIDC, 漢翔航空工業).

Foreign companies that will participate in the show include Lockheed Martin, Rockwell Collins, Milatek UG, General Dynamics Mission Systems, JEPICO, Becker Electronics Taiwan, and Sweden-based Teng Tools, according to the TAITRA.
